Daishu Zuo, R. Ac.,
Cert. Ac. (China), Dip. Ac. (Canada), B.A., M.S., Ph.D. (Pharmacy, China)

Hello, my name is Daishu, I am from China. I am a Registered Acupuncturist in good standing with the Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Association of Canada (CMAAC). I have had the privilege of practising acupuncture in a variety of places: I graduated from the Canadian College of Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine with a three-year Diploma in Acupuncture; I have a certificate in acupuncture from Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China specializing in acupuncture, and certification at the highest level of  Tui Na (Chinese massage). I received additional acupuncture training at the hospital in Beidaihe China and during my clinical practice in China I followed the work of Fengqin Zhang, an excellent Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor in Hebei province, China. Similarly, I followed the work of and was supervised while completing my diploma by Dr. Chen, M.D., Ph.D., and Dr. Li, M.D., Ph.D. both Traditional Chinese Medicine doctors in Halifax, Canada. I also have a B.A., M.S., and  Ph.D. all in pharmacy from China.

I was born into a medical family; my grandfather was a well-known traditional Chinese medicine doctor and director of the hospital in the local area. He wrote a significant amount of information about his medical experiences and passed all his notes on to the family. Both of my parents, now retired, were doctors. I was influenced at an early age by my parents and had access to a considerable number of books and information about Chinese medicine. I continued reading many classic Chinese medicine masterpieces, books, and clinical records of famous Chinese doctors. I have learned and continue to learn from their experience in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases to enrich my clinical experience. Chinese medicine has a history of more than 5,000 years. In the long-term struggle with diseases, the Chinese people have accumulated rich experience and unique methods. I am very happy to learn about Chinese medicine and acupuncture. I hope to use my knowledge to help you relieve your illness and protect your health.

Traditional and electric acupuncture is a unique treatment of diseases in China. Through the transmission of meridians and acupoints, as well as the application of certain methods of operation, acupuncture attempts to enhance and restore the self-healing ability of the human body to treat systemic diseases. It is effective, safe, and lacks side effects.

Currently, acupuncture may be used to treat conditions like:

Cupping is a therapy which uses glass cups as a tool to produce negative pressure by means of fire and exhaust so that it can be adsorbed on the body surface and cause local blood stasis. This is to achieve the functions of promoting meridians and collateral, promoting Qi and blood circulation, relieving swelling and pain, dispelling wind and dispelling cold. Cupping is mainly used for rheumatism, cold legs, back muscle strain, lumbar disc herniation, headache, dizziness, eye swelling, cough, asthma, abdominal pain, and more.

Pediatric tui na is an ancient Chinese discipline. The so-called pediatric tui na is guided by the theories of traditional Chinese medicine, zang-fu meridians, and collaterals. According to the characteristics of children's body, physiology, pathology and the shape and position of specific acupoints, it uses various manipulations to stimulate acupoints, so as to make meridians and collateral unblocked, Qi and blood flow unblocked, so as to achieve the purpose of adjusting the functions of zang-fu organs and especially for the treatment and health care of children. The pediatric tui na is widely used in diarrhea, vomiting, food accumulation, anorexia, constipation, abdominal pain, anal prolapse, cold, cough, asthma, fever, enuresis, night crow, muscular torticollis, pillow falling, convulsion and other diseases.

Q & A

Commly Asked Questions

1. Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture is practically painless! The needles we use are hair-thin – and first-time patients will often express their surprise when they realize how different acupuncture feels from what they expected.

2. How many treatments will I need?

Typically, the longer the patient has the condition, the longer the course of treatment before they experience substantial or lasting results. Acupuncture can be done as often as five times a week, once a week, or as little as once a month. Every person is different, acupuncture benefits some patients almost immediately, and many feel things such as a reduction in pain, stress-relief, increased energy, and better sleep after only one or a few treatments.

3. Will I bleed?

Generally, no.  Sometimes there is a tiny droplet of blood but it is easily wiped away with a cotton ball.

4. How deep do acupuncture needles go, can they poke through my organs?

No, they will not poke through any organs other than your skin.  Acupuncture needles are only inserted skin-deep in the body trunk.

5.  How do I choose an acupuncturist?

Your acupuncturist must be registered or certified with a provincial or territorial association or board.

6. Is acupuncture safe?

When performed by a completely trained, licensed professional, acupuncture is extremely safe. All licensed acupuncturists today use individually packaged, sterile, disposable needles. So there is virtually no chance of infection or contagion.

7. What are the negative side effects of acupuncture?

There are rarely side-effects from acupuncture.

8. How long does an acupuncture treatment take?

The session takes about an hour.

9. What circumstances are not suitable for acupuncture?

When you are very tired, mentally stressed, or fasting, acupuncture is not suitable.

10. Can pregnant women have acupuncture?

Yes, but pregnant women should not have too many acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture is forbidden on the abdomen, lumbosacral area, and acupoints that can cause uterine contractions, such as Hegu, Sanyinjiao, Kunlun, and Zhiyin.
